Extract from Canton Intelligence Report for half year

ended 30th September 1936.

MOVEMENTS OF FOREIGN OFFICIALS

Visit of His Excellency the Governor of Hong Kong.

His Excellency Sir Andrew Caldecott Kt., C. M. G.,

arrived at Canton on September 17th at 11.25 a.m.

for a two day visit. His Excellency, who was accompanied by

Lady Caldecott and Captain W. E. Cragg, his A.D.C., was met

at the station by H. M. Consul-General and his staff and

representatives of Chinese Military and Civil officials,

including General Chien Ta Chen, personal representative of

Marshal Chiang Kai Shek. A guard of honour and two military

bands were provided, and, after inspecting the guard, His

Excellency and party adjourned to the residence of H. M.

Consul-General.

In the evening Sir Andrew, accompanied by Lady

Caldecott and H. M. Consul-General proceeded to Whampoa

where Marshal Chiang Kai Shek was host at an informal

dinner. Opportunity was taken before and after dinner to

discuss questions of mutual interest to Hong Kong and South

China. The morning of the 18th September was spent in

sightseeing and at 12.30 a luncheon was given in His Excelency's

honour by the Pacification Commissioner, General Yu Han Mow,

and the Chairman of the Provincial Government, General Huang

Mu Sung, at which all prominent local officials were present.
